Catching up with friends

After being in Maui for nearly 1 week, I finally made contact with Iolani Yamashiro (call sign Io). She and I first met touring Europe with the America's Youth in Concert when we were in high school. We met up again at the Conservatory of Music, University of the Pacific playing many concerts together and sharing many memories playing weddings/dinners/receptions with the Nouveau Arts String Quartet.
Today Io was leading a youth orchestra camp here in Maui and I stopped by to say hello. We had a great visit. I got there towards the end of the morning rehearsal where Io handed me her violin and music. I joined the group for 30 minutes. We took a lunch break and then returned for dress rehearsal. We had not seen each other in many years. Her smile is as beautiful as ever and she has truly brought music to the island. What a gift! It was a great way to spend my last day ashore.
