July 7, 1500(L)/Jul 8, 0100(Z) 3931N/15208...about 1300NM abeam Cape Mendocino making 7 kts on a 055 heading. We are also about 1300NM from the straits. We left Kauai at 1530(L) on June 27, thus starting our 11th day.
Fortunate for us the wind got up before Chris. So after sitting idle most of the night, we put out all three sails and started tracking once again. It has been a great day of sailing with constant wind and 1-2 meter swells.
For me it was laundry day. The washing machine is the old fashion kind, a bucket and your hands. We use the cold salt water wash and rinse cycle, ring dry and then hang the clothes to air in the fresh salty breeze in various places around the boat. Currently we are flying underwear, shirts, pants, shorts, etc. in addition to flying the flag off the stern. There are two main challenges with our method of drying. 1) hanging the clothes securely to the boat and 2) choosing what level of dampness meets your needs. There is no such thing as dry! In addition to the laundry, there is a daily need to reduce the dampness of your sleeping bag which if not drenched by an impromptu squall of rain or unsuspecting wave crashing through an open window, it most certainly saturated by the constant drip of condensation. I must say we look like a band of Gypsies headin across the Pacific. Let's see if Nick can capture that picture?
