We're Not Alone

July 10 1107(L)/1907(Z); 4305N/14734W; dense fog, less than 1/8 mi visibility, steady winds, boat speed is 6.5 kts on 350 heading. We are closer to Alaska than Seattle!
Yesterday when we turned North we changed from starboard tack to port tack. What is the real significance of this factoid I share? Well that means the boat is heeling the other direction and after sleeping for 12 days on a starboard tack, the change is very refreshing. I slept great! I used to think people were either a side sleeper, back sleeper or stomach sleeper. Well, on the boat there is no such thing. What you get is a hybrid. You can lay on your back, but with 20 degrees of heeling, it feels like you are on your side. Of course you can lay on your side, but only with one leg reaching forward and the other backwards to stabilize your self from rolling over. But once you doze off, the legs will move and you will soon default to a quasi back sleeper or stomach sleeper. Nick rolled out of his berth a couple times last night and took reasonable action. He moved to the floor and is still sawing logs (that boy can snore).
I started my duty this morning at 0500. After checking the weather faxes, I headed up to the open cockpit. This is the coveted position of the on duty captain. As all others were asleep, I was the duty captain. There was dense fog with less than 1/8 mile visibility and it was very damp. Although it was not raining, the sails and rails were dripping as if it were. I left the autopilot on and checked the radar at regular intervals. To my surprise at 0630, I had a return on the radar which I concluded was our first ship siting. It got no closer than 8 miles. We have traveled over 1400NM and this is the first ship we have seen and because of the fog, we only saw the radar return. Alas! We are not alone. That said, for the past 1400NM we have been about as alone as you can be and still be on the planet!
1400(L) - Milestone - 1000NM to go (as the crow flies). From Kauai our planned route was about 2800NM.

  1. I've lost the email that Chris sent out with contact info for forwarding short emails to the Orisha. If someone has that info, please forward to me (robert.mcg@gmail.com). As they get closer, I'd like to ask Chris and crew to approximate when and where they will make first landfall so I can be there if possible. Thanks. Bob McGrath.
