It has been mostly overcast and foggy for the last 5 days and slow going. Yesterday we motored for 8 hours. As sunset approached we had a light wind and put out the sails for the night. This morning was much the same. Smooth glassy
water with no wind. Dom and I took down the sails and waited for Chris to wake before motoring. Only Nick can sleep when the motor is on. His snoring and the motor make a nice duet! So after Chris awoke, he did the thankless job of
changing the fuel filter and then we cranked the motor once again. Three hours later we came upon sunny skies and some light winds. We are once again under sail making 5kts. There are many benefits of motoring; unlimited power for one. We run the water
maker, hot water heater, autopilot, etc. And of course we can steer any course. But the best part is that under motor we cruise at a better trolling speed. It has been quite a dry spell for Hooker. But today when Dom got up he said "I'm
thankful for the ahi we are going to catch today," and he was right! While motoring, he hooked a 30-35lb ahi tuna. Easily the biggest catch thus far. I went to school this time as he performed his surgical filleting. Chris prepped
some soy, wasabi, ginger and a touch of honey and we enjoyed the best tuna sashimi ever. It was melt in your mouth good! The rest of the meat is in the fridge and will provide us dinner for several days. Way to go Hooker! I won't miss the canned food goulash over noodles tonight!Earlier this morning before we brought down the sails, a containership crossed our bow. It passed from starboard to port and according to the radar it was
1.8NM away. But it was so large it appeared much closer than that. I could see the markings on the hull and could make out the individual containers. There were 12 stacks of containers forward of the cabin area and 4 stacks aft (cross section vantage point). So, sails are out, fish is in the fridge patiently waiting for the grill, Dom is on the bow with guitar in hand composing a song, Chris and Nick are in the cockpit enjoying the light breeze, cool air and a horizon to horizon blue sky. I will join them. This afternoon was made for sailing.
